How to Prepare Mathematics for MBA Exams 2013 – Part 2

CAT Quantitative Aptitude preparation

The syllabus for the mathematics section or Quantitative aptitude is roughly the same for various MBA/MCA entrance exams including CAT and Non CAT exams. However, there is huge difference in various types of questions that are asked. Thus, the approach to preparation for CAT and Non CAT entrance exams varies and separate strategy is required for cracking these different exams.

In order to prepare for the CAT exams, students have to master not only the coverage and width of topics but also ensure that there is sufficient depth and clarity of basic concepts. The questions are related to the same basic concepts but there is an application of a high degree. For instance, although the basic theorems of geometry are the same but a single question may require application of multiple theorems.

Understand the basic concepts in detail: It is compulsory for you to understand the basic concepts in details because the higher degree of application of these concepts is required for solving the quantitative questions of CAT and XAT. One cannot score well by simply learning the formulae and familiarising with the topics.

Identify the Areas of Strength:You should identify the areas of strength where you have mastery of topics and you feel comfortable in solving the difficult questions easily. These topics are the areas where you can grasp the fundamentals quickly. In short, your accuracy for solving these problems is the highest and it is reflected in your mock test scores. You should identify such areas and try to capitalise on it by scoring heavily in these questions.

Spend more time in solving questions from your areas of strength:You should ensure to score heavily in your areas of strength. You should invest more time in solving the difficult questions from your areas of strength. You can analyse the previous year’s CAT papers for finding out how many questions come from your areas of strength. In case this number is 10 to 15, then it is a good sign for you. However, if there are very few questions then you need to identify another area of strength. Thus, the trick here lies in identify and developing your areas of strength for scoring heavily in CAT quantitative exams.

Solve question papers in multiple rounds: Students should prepare a strategy for attempting questions and divide the attempts into multiple rounds.

First round:In first round, only those questions should be attempted which can be solved quickly and with 100 percent accuracy. In this round, you can leave those questions that are doubtful and may take a longer time. You should circle these questions and returns to them later in second round if time permits.

Second round:Attempt the questions that take more time and you are sure of solving them.

Third Round: In this round, you should attempt those questions which are doubtful. You should leave those questions completely about which you do not have any clue. Attempt only those, which can be solved with assurance.

How to Prepare Mathematics for MBA/MCA Entrance Exams 2013

Do you consider Mathematics as a big challenge for cracking the MBA/MCA entrance Exams? It is a no brainer to assume that students have to perform exceedingly well in order to get shortlisted for admission to top MBA/MCA colleges of the country. However, one need not worry at all because the mastering of the quantitative aptitude can be achieved with focused strategy in preparation and persistent hard work.

The syllabus for the mathematics section or Quantitative aptitude is roughly the same for various MBA/MCA entrance exams like CAT, SNAP, IRMA, MAT, NMIMS, etc. However, there is huge difference in various types of questions that are asked. Thus, the approach to preparation for CAT and Non CAT entrance exams varies and separate strategy is required for cracking these different exams.

Non CAT Quantitative Aptitude preparation

Cover the entire syllabus:It is advised to leave no section of the syllabus unprepared because in these exams, the coverage of syllabus is more essential than depth. In fact, one should not leave the complex topics like probability or permutation and combinations.

Learn all the formulas thoroughly:One should learn all the formulas thoroughly and get familiar with Common topics such as Algebra, Logarithms, geometrical theorems, etc. One has to practise all these formulas to the extent that one can effortlessly apply them in basic questions.

Focus on every Sub area and standard questions:In the quantitative aptitude, every functional area has 5 to 6 standard sub-areas related to it and each such sub-area is based on 2 to 3 basic concepts that involve related standard questions. For instance, the sub areas in case of work-time-speed questions include Circular motion, Clocks, Relative Speed, Pipes and Cisterns, Boats, and Work efficiency. Students should practise every topic and sub topic well in order to solve related questions quickly, and correctly.

Focus on fast and accurate calculations:Students who are targeting Non-CAT quantitative aptitude exam should focus on solving the questions at great speed with 100% accuracy. As the complexity level of these questions is average, these questions only require faster calculation. For that, you have to memorise the multiplication tables up to first 30 natural numbers along with squares, cubes and square roots of the first 20 numbers.
